Depending on your service subscription, you may be subscribed to up to six 32 Gallon cans each week. Residential customer service is can averaged throughout the quarter.

What does ‘can averaged’ mean?
Can averaging means that the customer is allotted a certain number of “can credits” for the quarter, depending on the subscription level.
As an example, during a week when nothing is placed out for collection, the “can credit” is not used and an extra can may be placed out the following week with no added charge, since the two cans picked up were averaged over two weeks.

Are pine needles picked up for free?
No, pine needles/greenwaste is not collected for free. Each bag or can counts as an extra and will be billed on the next invoice.

How is residential trash collected?
Residential trash is collected in customer provided cans or bags, not to exceed 32 Gallons in volume capacity. Cans must be manufactured for manual collection, no toter or cart style wheeled containers with affixed lids. Cans must have a fully detachable lid and if wheeled, the maximum wheel diameter allowed is 2 inches.
May my trash can have wheels?

Do I have to have a bear box?
Certain new construction, renovations or short-term rentals may require bear box installation per county ordinance. TTSD does not require bear box installation, but highly encourages customers to contain their trash cans in industry standard bear boxes.
*Bear boxes placed further than 25ft from the roadway will result in additional fees.
Why does my invoice show Extra – Overage Charges?
At the end of the quarter, the cans collected are averaged against the service weeks and if there were more cans collected than service week credits available, the “Extra” charges are recorded on the last service day of the quarter.

What are common reasons for extra charges?
The most common reasons for extra charges include:
- Overflowing cans – Cans that have materials stacked above the rim of the can.
- Cardboard boxes – Cardboard not contained in a blue bag.
- Additional bags – Bags on top or on the side of a can.
- Greenwaste bags – Extra bags placed for collection.
- Untied blue bags – Blue bags placed for collection but not tied closed.
- Contaminated blue bags – Non-recyclable materials placed in a blue bag.
- Additional can – Second can in bear box.

How can I avoid extra charges?
- Sign up for 2-can weekly service.
- Utilize the free blue bag recycling program.
- Ensure that trash is not stacked above the rim of the can by placing the lid on the can.
- Do not stack any bags on top of the can.
- Don’t pile bags or boxes uncontained outside of a can.

Why was my trash not collected?
There are various reasons why your service may not have been completed.
Some examples:
- A vehicle may have been blocking access to the bear box.
- Snow or ice may have blocked access the bear box.
- A snow berm may have blocked access to curbside cans or a bear box.
- Road construction or other roadway blocking activity, the truck couldn’t get to your address.
- The cans or bear box were not clearly visible to the driver.
May I pay my bill online?
Yes, customers may logon to their e-portal account to pay online. Additionally, customers may sign up for auto-pay, either by calling 530-583-7800 or online in their e-portal account.

How can I schedule a Bulky Item pickup?
Customers may call (530) 583-7800 to schedule a bulky item pickup, in Placer County residents with active service are eligible for two free bulky item pickups per fiscal year.

How do I schedule a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) appointment?
Customers may schedule Household Hazardous Waste appointments online (Residential) (Commercial) or may call the administrative office at (530) 583-7800.
HHW drop-off is held at Eastern Regional MRF, 900 Cabin Creek Rd, Truckee, CA.
What happens to my trash after it is picked up?
All material, trash and recycling, is sorted at Eastern Regional Landfill. During sorting, available recyclables and commodities are diverted from the waste stream.Do I have to use blue bags for my items to be recycled?
No, the blue bag recycling program is not mandatory. All waste is sorted for recycling regardless of how it is collected.
What should I do with cardboard boxes?
The best method to recycle cardboard boxes is self-haul drop off at Eastern Regional Landfill for free during open hours. Otherwise, be sure to breakdown your boxes and place them in a tied blue bag for free pickup. Loose cardboard is subject to extra charges.
